Solar Decathlon Europe

SDE is a competition between universities from all over the world which involves designing and building prototypes of energy self-sufficient houses which use the sun as their only source of energy. The aim is to promote sustainable development through research and innovation applied to architecture and efficient construction.

The final phase of SDE’s forthcoming edition will take place in Madrid next September. Teams taking part will build their houses life size at the so called Villa Solar, which will be located in the Casa de Campo, open to the public, and where the houses will have to undergo the ten trials of the competition.

This edition of Solar Decathlon Europe will have 20 teams from 14 countries taking part (Germany, Brazil, China, Denmark, Egypt, Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Romania), which will make it the most international so far.

Solar Decathlon Europe is organized by the Department for Architecture, Housing and Urban Development of the Ministry of Public Works, with the collaboration of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and Madrid City Council, and the support of the US Department of Energy and the IDAE. Moreover it is sponsored by Schneider Electric, as strategic sponsor, Kömmerling, and its official collaborators are AENA, ADIF, RENFE, INECO and FEVE.

SDE is an official partner in the European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign and has been recently awarded at the EU Sustainable Energy Europe Awards.

With these activities, SDE joins in celebration of 2012 as International Year of Sustainable Energy for all, as declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNO).
