THE SUSTAINABILITY PRIZE TO MED IN ITALY (ITALY)

 

-          Andalucía Team (Spain) has achieved the second price and a draw in the third prize: Counter Entropy Team (Germany) y Team Brasil (Brasil)

Half way through the Solar Decathlon Europe, the proposals are still presenting a high level of competition and the fight for the top gets harder day by day.

After a long process of deliberation, Emilio Mitre, Manfred Hegger y Jason Twill, juries of the Sustainability Contest of Solar Decathlon Europe 2012, have named Med in Italy (Italy) to be the winner. In order to be able to decide, they have analyzed the environmental impact during the whole cycle of life of each and every house. In other words, they have taken into account from the extraction and transformation of the materials, their construction process to their years of use until their demolition and recycling program.

Med in Italy is a Mediterranean tipical house  with the patio. A careful choice of building materials is the response to the request of a sincere balance with the environment. The most coherent choice, in that sense is the use of natural materials, coming from renewable sources, with low levels of embodied primary energy, resuable at the end of building lifecycle and recyclable at the end of the product lifecycle.

 

The classification of Prize of the Sustainability Contest has been:

 

Today the out of competition GBCe Prize (Green Building Council España), on went to (e)co Team (Spain). Andalucía Team (Spain), Rhône-Alpes(France) y Ecolar Team (Germany) were also mentioned. GBCe is a non-profit, autonomous organization composed by representatives from the construction industry for a common aim towards an energy and ecologically conscious approach to the built environment design.

The following Saturday 29th, after completing the 10 contests of the competition, will be announced during the closing ceremony the solar house winner of the edition of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012.

Solar Decathlon Europe is organized by the Ministry of Public Works, Madrid City Council and the Madrid Polytechnic University (UPM) via its Higher Technical School of Arquitecture (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid). Its main sponsors are Schneider Electric and Kömmerling, & its official collaborators include AENA, ADIF, RENFE, and INECO y FEVE. It is also supported by the US Departament of Energy and the IDAE.
